They are made from Brass and the carvings are made from buffalo horn, abalone shell, mother of pearl shell, bone or wood. 
 
Brass has a gold-colored look and is Nickle-free. Just like sterling silver (precious metal), the material can oxidize. This means that the material can turn black. But you can polish it again to make it shine. Because it is an alloy that also contains copper, in very exceptional cases an allergic reaction occurs. This is a copper allergy.
